Complete prenatal care
Prenatal visits include examinations, thorough discussions
about tests you may elect or decline and, most important,
time (an average prenatal visit lasts forty-five minutes!).
A significant goal of our prenatal care is developing
a comfortable and mutually trusting relationship to ensure
that your pregnancy is as healthy and satisfying as it
can be. We hold prenatal visits in two locations; our
home office in Columbia City in South Seattle and at the
Community Birth and Family Center in Montlake, just south
of the University District.

A choice of birth settings
You may choose to give birth in your home or in one of
two licensed birth centers. In either setting the midwife
and her assistant spend your labor with you and you maintain
optimum control of the environment. Families may participate
as much as they wish; the choice of support people is
entirely up to you. You will never be separated from your
baby. Mothers and babies are observed carefully in the
immediate postpartum period to ensure normal recovery
and adaptation. A thorough examination is performed and
instructions for self-care are reviewed. Mothers delivering
at the birth center may go home as soon as two hours after
birth; the typical length of stay is under four hours.
Your midwife, in either setting, will remain with you
until you are completely comfortable without her. Should
transfer to a hospital be indicated during labor, we consult
with the receiving hospital personnel, accompany you to
the hospital and assist in making the plan of care there.
We provide support and advocacy during the time you are
in the hospital, resuming your postpartum care upon discharge.
