Suzy Myers, LM, CPM, MPH
I was drawn to women’s health care right out of college in the early 1970’s, but I didn’t really know what a midwife was then. I had an incredible opportunity to be a women’s health activist when the home birth movement was just beginning a renaissance in our country. When I discovered midwifery, I felt I had found exactly what I was meant to do in this life! After more than 30 years, that first instinct has been confirmed. Now that I have had the amazing experience of attending births of young women who I “caught” when they were born, I feel incredibly fortunate to be a midwife.
I believe that the experience of giving birth will be deeply felt – for better or for worse. I have dedicated my professional life to making it “for better” for as many women as possible. Believing that all women benefit from midwifery care, I am presently focusing my work on training the next generation of midwives and expanding the role midwives play in national health policy. Since early 2008, I’ve stepped back from being a primary birth attendant as my role as midwifery educator and advocate has expanded. I continue to see clients during their prenatal and postnatal care and oversee the smooth functioning of the practice.
In my personal life, I enjoy an active lifestyle with many recreational interests, and am most blessed to have a wonderful family, including my life partner of 40 years, Jody Granatir, our two grown daughters, Sarah and Nina, son-in-law Philip and grandson Max, whose birth was attended by California midwife Maria Iorillo in March, 2009.
Right now, I am actively involved in promoting the MAMA Campaign to include Certified Professional Midwives in Health Care Reform. Please check it out. I'd appreciate your support!
